Gun Buy-Back
Just before Christmas 2007, the Newport News police held its first gun buy-back program in more than18 years. As an incentive for residents to bring in their weapons, the police department had 300 gift cards from Wal-Mart and a local grocery store to trade for each gun brought in. Some people brought in one gun, some as many as five or more. But for each weapon, no matter how many a single person handed over, they received a $100 gift card for that gun. The gift cards soon ran out and most of the waiting crowd left, taking their guns with them.Travis
